Brake discs rarely fail without warning. The most common sign is a vibration through the brake pedal or steering wheel when slowing down, especially from highway speed.
Other signs include squealing or grinding noises, visible grooves or blue heat spots on the disc face, and longer stopping distances.
If you notice any of these, a quick measured inspection will tell you whether skimming can restore the disc or whether replacement is required.
